Mattress Sizes – Purchasing a new mattress is an investment. Along with choosing the right style of mattress for your sleeping type — you also need to consider what size mattress you need according to your body size, the amount of sleepers in your bed and the available space in your sleeping area.
Note: For purposes of this article, we will be discussing specific mattress sizes. Please keep in mind that most mattresses are available in a wide variety of materials and foundations.
Twin Bed Dimensions = 38″ x 75″
Twin size mattresses are one of the most popular options on the market today as they are commonly used by children who have outgrown their baby beds and by adults who have a smaller room.
This is also a common option for bunk beds as well as daybeds in many households.
A twin size mattress measures at 38 x 75 inches. Twin mattresses are the smallest of standard beds, except for those specifically made for babies or toddlers.
Twin XL Bed Dimensions = 38″ x 80″
Twin XL beds are 5 inches longer than twin beds with their length measuring 80 inches and width remaining at 38 inches. An extra-long twin mattress is a perfect selection for those who are taller in height.
If you’ve ever wondered if a twin XL mattress can fit on a king size bed frame, the answer to this question is yes. A double twin XL fits nicely on a standard king bed frame so you and your partner can sleep comfortably on separate beds with different feels.
Full Bed Dimensions = 54″ x 74″
A full size mattress measures 54” x 75.” Most of the time, this type of mattress is referred to as a standard double or a full size mattress. This is the ideal choice for those who need a little more surface space than that of a twin bed, but can’t afford to fit a queen size mattress in their bedroom.
Some couples prefer a full size bed due to a smaller sleep area, however a queen or king size mattress tend to be more comfortable for two. If you have kids or pets who like to crawl into bed, chances are that a double bed will be too small for you.
Full (Double) XL mattresses are 6 inches longer than regular, full size beds. These mattresses are perfect for individuals who need extra leg room while they sleep.
Queen Bed Dimensions = 60″ x 80″
The Queen size mattress is the top-selling mattress in the U.S.
Queen size beds are the preferred mattress for couples, providing just enough room to spread out at 60” x 80”.
Make sure your bedroom has enough space to accommodate a queen size mattress before purchasing one online. Experts recommend a bedroom to be at least 10’ x 10’ square feet to fit a queen bed.
King Bed Dimensions = 76″ x 80″
King beds are much wider than queen size mattresses — measuring at 76 x 80 inches. A king size mattress is the same size as 2 Twin XLs put together. That’s plenty of surface space for a good night’s sleep. However, it is not recommended for rooms smaller than 12′ x 12’.
If you are lucky enough to have a big bedroom, you will find that a king bed can accommodate your partner, kids and pets.
California King Bed Dimensions = 72″ x 84″
The California king is the longest mattress in the market — measuring 72” x 84”. These beds are an excellent option for those who need extra legroom. Although the California king is 4 inches narrower than a standard king, the additional 4 inches are made up in the length of the mattress.
Bunk Bed Dimensions
Bunk beds are perfect for bedrooms that have two or more people sleeping in them. Most bunk beds are designed for twin mattresses. However, bunk bed size can vary. For instance, there are bunk bed designs on the market that are made to fit futon mattresses and even full size beds. If you come across a bunk bed with a narrow top and a wide bottom, you will likely require one twin mattress and one full size mattress.
Futon Mattress Dimensions
Futons come in different sizes and styles which can pose a challenge if you are not familiar with mattress dimensions. The armrests for futons can also be wider. The width of a futon can range anywhere from 76 inches all the way up to 80 inches.
A queen size futon measures in at 60 x 80 inches and can take up a lot of space. For futons with an armrest, measure the thickness of the armrest and factor it into the mattress size.
In the case of a full size futon, the standard measurement is 54 x 75 inches. Even though the mattress is the same size as a standard full mattress, keep in mind that when converted, the sofa itself is considerably smaller than the queen futon sofa.
