The History Of Simmons Bedding

Serta & SimmonsSimmons Bedding was founded in 1870 by Zalmon G. Simmons, a banker state legislator, and innovative entrepreneur. In the early 20th century, Simmons crafted the world’s first direct to consumer mattress model, allowing consumers to test mattresses in-store and then order directly from the factory warehouse.

In the late 19th century, Simmons developed a new machine that would eliminate the slow process of building mattress coils by hand. In 1896, Simmons Pocketed Coil® spring machine was born, paving the way for the signature Beautyrest mattress in 1925.

Simmons was the first mattress company to introduce a king and queen size mattress in the 1950s.

In 2008 Simmons invented a hybrid technology that fused memory foam and Pocketed Coil springs, leaving the rest of the industry scrambling to follow.
